Data Append Explained

Data append is the specific enrichment operation of adding new columns to your existing records. You start with a provider file containing certain fields (e.g., NPI, name, address) and a data vendor appends additional fields (e.g., email, phone, practice size, EHR vendor) by matching your records against their database.

The append process starts with identity resolution: matching your records to the vendor's records using NPI numbers, name+address combinations, or other identifiers. Once matched, the vendor copies their additional data fields onto your records. The result is your original file with new columns added.

Common append fields for healthcare provider data include: verified email addresses, direct and office phone numbers, fax numbers, website URLs, practice size (solo/small/medium/large), specialty certifications, hospital affiliations, group practice memberships, and technology vendor information. Different use cases require different append fields. A medical device sales team needs different data points than a healthcare marketing agency.

Why Data Append Matters for Healthcare Data

Data append is how you turn a basic provider list into a sales-ready database. Most teams start with NPPES data or an existing CRM export and need to append the specific fields their workflow requires. Understanding append pricing and match rates helps you budget accurately and set realistic expectations.

Real-World Example

📋

A healthcare consulting firm has 25,000 provider records in Salesforce with NPI numbers and addresses but no email addresses. They submit the file for email append and receive verified emails for 15,000 records (60% match rate). The appended emails have a 94% deliverability rate, enabling the firm to launch email campaigns to 15,000 providers they previously could only reach by phone or mail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between data append and data enrichment?

Data append is a specific type of enrichment that adds new columns to your existing records. Enrichment is a broader term that includes append, cleansing, deduplication, and verification. Append focuses specifically on adding new data fields.

How much does data append cost for healthcare providers?

Pricing varies by field and volume. Email append typically costs $0.05-0.25 per record. Phone append is similar. Full enrichment with multiple fields can range from $0.10-0.50 per record. Volume discounts apply for larger lists.

How do I prepare my file for data append?

Include NPI numbers wherever possible. NPI is the most reliable matching key for healthcare providers. Also include full name, practice address, and any other identifying information. The more matching fields you provide, the higher the match rate.
